I have been volunteering with LeftOvers for a few months and it has been such an incredible volunteering experience. To combine helping out less fortune individuals in my home city AND help divert waste from going to the landfill...it was a no brainer to sign up! In the past when I’m eager to volunteer I find that there are so many hoops to jump through, from training to meeting a certain amount of volunteer hours on their timeline makes it complicated to fit into my schedule. That has not been my experience at LeftOvers. When I initially inquired about volunteering all I had to do was email and they immediately sent me a waiver to sign and email back. That was it... and I was in their system as a volunteer! After I signed the waiver all I had to do next was simply go to a website to see pick up & drop off locations & times and sign up for one. From there it is up to you to be accountable to pick up the food and drop it off at the determined location. After you have dropped off the food you simply login to the website and log the amount of pounds of food you have rescued. That's it - volunteer task complete! The flexibility to sign up when I can has worked perfectly for my work and family life and has allowed me to volunteer with more consistency.
I highly recommend checking out their website as well as the sign up form. Who knows, you might see a route on your way home from work, or on your way to soccer practice, etc that works with your schedule to help out! One pick up a week/month/when you can is making a world of a difference to agencies’ food budgets, alleviating food costs and allowing them to allocate those new found extra dollars to support individuals in different ways.
