Toy Library

Toy Library

Trying to lead a minimalist life as well as trying your best to achieve a zero waste home can be tricky with little ones. I believe strongly in play and feel that children do need toys, not a crazy amount but things to learn and create with. The definition of toys will vary from home to home as well as from child to child depending on their needs. Our toys are as gender neutral as possible (not for any particular stance but more cross over play with both a girl and a boy) with a focus on dramatic play - babies, kitchen, dr. sets, lego and play-doh. Items that can be manipulated into different games and different uses very easily. The Sasquatch cubs love their toys but it is also exciting to go over to other people's homes and play with new treasures. This excitement got a few of us mamas thinking that we could easily create a Toy Library to share new toys without purchasing them and more importantly, storing them! After a few coffee dates we came up with a plan to create a private Facebook group to post photos of toys that we were willing to lend out. It has been so exciting for the kids to go through photos and choose a new toy to take home and borrow after a play date. It has also been a great teaching moment to the child who owns the toy that we are able to lend an item out, share it, and witness that it will be returned. We have had the opportunity to play with new puzzles, and create cool new forts with borrowed materials, without purchasing or storing! It's so great to be apart of a sharing community. I have read articles in the past that sharing communities are dying out because things are so cheap to just purchase yourself rather than hunt them down, commute, return, etc. That being said, I find the sharing community lifestyle among families to be strong - it takes a village to raise cubs, a village full of bumbo chairs that are only used for 6 weeks, play mats, and snow pants. I hope the idea of a Toy Library inspires you to reach out to your own close knit group of mamas or papas and find some sharing opportunities!
