Zero Waste Community Events
It feels like I haven’t posted in ages! I have been busy summering with the kids and volunteering in the neighbourhood. I was on my community’s stampede breakfast committee and enjoyed planning a very fun morning. We were so fortunate that the rain held off all morning and we were able to enjoy pancakes, fire trucks, marching bands and playground time. Although events like these are wonderful for the community the downside is there is a lot of waste created. In order to do our part, our little family planned ahead, bringing our own utensils, napkins and coffee cups. We even took our paper plates home to be composted too - woo! Every little bit helps and we all need to be the change we want to see! It was a very successful morning enjoyed by all!
Another project I have been working on in the community is a kid’s triathlon for kids ages 3 - 8 years of age. When I was couple months postpartum with my 2nd I thought it would be easier to plan a community triathlon than to arrange nap schedules and attend the kid’s triathlon, Tinman in Vulcan, Alberta… I’m not quite sure what my sleep deprived brain was thinking…! Although it’s been a lot of work it has been a ton of fun to plan. The fabulous committee of mama’s I have recruited are also on board with all of my zero waste crazy town of not wanting signs, race bibs, medals, etc! I have also been so impressed with the sponsors we have acquired and how they have been a-okay with our zero waste mentality. Our race is a very grassroots race that focuses on exposing kids to the triathlon sport, providing an inexpensive event for families and creating a zero waste event! I’m still looking for a few more volunteers to help the event run smoothly but other than that everything seems to be falling into place! I look forward to writing a follow-up post on how successful and fun it will be!
